The scenario is reminiscent of the post-apocalyptic scene portrayed in Cormac McCarthy's novel, The Road (see earlier). Will Smith is the sole survivor on earth and scientist in New York city following armageddon. He experiments on the once-human, inhabitants to find the cure to the man-made virus.
