This is a collection of Nick Hornby’s monthly columns from the “The Believer” magazine. He lists the books he’s bought, then out of those that he actually reads he reviews them. A wonderful insight into what a famous author reads, and a great way of structuring one’s future reading list. (50 words)

This book has managed to take the various thoughts and learnings of people such as Socrates and Nietzsche and discuss them in the context of modern day life. Topics have been successfully presented in a format that is not only easy to consume, but a pleasure to read as well. (50 words)

This honest account of the author’s battle with his eating habits is well written and a breeze to read, injecting humour into desperate situations in a way that wins over the reader. I found this book invaluable. It offers various pointers on how to find your calling in life, working in a profession or area you love. Quite unlike other books in it’s genre as it is a breeze to read, and offers many references for those who want to dig deeper. (50 words)

This was one of those novels that you can’t stop reading. This take on South London suburbia is superb, with parallels drawn to the city and abroad, all told through the adventures of Karim, son of an Indian immigrant. This was Hanif’s first novel, and it’s a classic. (48 words)

If you're looking for some airport fodder this is spot on, Chrichton does his usual trick of writing a screenplay and then padding things out a little to make it a book. He tends to get a bit boring with all the anti-environmentalism but the action ticks along nicely. (49 words)

Well, it's better than the Da Vinci Code...and to give the book its due, it is mostly fast moving and exciting and has lots of twists and turns. Brown is as good as Himingway in describing the tiny romantic sub-plot...but I still maintain that Ludlum did this genre better! (49 words)

An account of one man's experiences of running a hotel in communist Chinese-run Tibet in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The author strikes the fine balance between travelogue and factual account of the politics and humanity of an untamed Tibet perfectly - and makes it very funny and personal. (50 words)
