Winner of the UK Mercury Music Prize 2005 & what a deserved winner. Antony's voice is beautifully haunting & unlike anything you've heard before. The track 'Hope Theres Someone There For Me' is so emotionally grinding it will have you in tears but ones that you will want to shed (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This is a wonderful album from the former front-man of Sugar and Husker Du. Bob switches between his new-found passion for dance/electronica ('Shine Your Love Light Hope') and his more traditional punk-rock heratige (Paralysed) and each song draws you in. His best work since Copper Blue! (46 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Neil Hannon returns with more of his trademark wittiness in the form of folks-y pop ballads. Even if you don't listen to the lyrics his voice is enthralling but with the clever content and arrangements it's a huge surprise that he is not more successful. (45 words)
| 0 Comment(s)There's been lots of press about the 'Monkeys and, on the basis of this record, a lot of it is deserved. They are the Carter USM of the 2000s with social commentary similar to The Streets added in! Standouts include 'Dancing Shoes' and 'Fake Tales of San Francisco' (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This intimate 1600-capacity show, their first performance in the UK for six years, was never going to disappoint the fans. With new material from their upcoming release intertwined with old classics like Even Flow and Porch, the band never let up throughout the intense two-hour set. Nothing short of amazing. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)What a great release. The first disc contains ballad-like material, with the second moving up in tempo with a fusion of jazz, rock and alt.rock styles. His versatility has always shone through in his recordings and his live performances, which I had the pleasure of seeing a few years ago. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This release compiles a number of cds and EPs from Pulp before they became radio friendly. Songs like 'Will To Power', 'Little Girl' and 'Dogs Are Everywhere' (a different version of which appeared as a B-side on Common People) showcase a dark and brooding Pulp dealing with 1980s life. | 0 Comment(s)The poet and musician, Ivor Cutler, sadly died this week aged 83. He is my second favourite poet and this album makes me smile every time I listen to it. Poems such as 'An American Drink' and 'The Specific Sundry' confirm Cutler as a brilliant absurdist and wit. (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)A music journalist rather cheekily suggesting that "the world wasn't ready for Salad". This compilation of their mid-1990's (their zenith) singles is ace - simple (and possibly a bit one-dimensional) guitar based indie-pogo tunes which are led by the stunning Marijne. 'Kent' and 'Diminsihed Clothes' evoke happy University memories! (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This double CD gives a description on the inlay of what is going on in each scene and Act in this rollercoaster ride of love and revenge. The European Chamber Orchestra and Chorus provides the music and was led and conducted by my colleague, Duncan Hinnells. Beats ClassicFM! (48 words)
