This has the makings of an interesting and funny comedy but instead we get gurning and pratfalls. There are a few amusing moments but other than that you can steer well clear of this. (41 words)
| 0 Comment(s)It's unfortunate for this movie that it comes at the same time as Batman. Where that is destined to be a future classic, this is just another summer blockbuster with formulaic bad guy, effects and story line. It's a pity as Michael Chiklis is a good actor and deserves more. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Wes Anderson's take on Rohald Dahl's classic is itself fantastic. George Clooney and Meryl Streep lead the cast of voices for this kids movie which will please every parent possibly more than the kids! It manages to be exciting and cool and slackerish. Genius. (44 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Almost impossible to rate this film. It will tell those who are well informed little they didn't already know but nevertheless offers some frightening insights into how international politics actually works. Felt a little uncomfortable with how Moore depicted some of the soldiers and their families. (46 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This amazing account of the fast food industry will make you think twice about your next Big Mac or Zinger Twister Meal. The focus is mainly in the US, but the effects on people’s jobs, health, communities and families are globally recognised. To be read only after light meals. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)It's been years since the deaths of Peter McAllister's parents landed him in Clarksbury, but his outsider status still remains. When a mysterious woman named Fiona tries to convince Peter that he is more than what he seems, will Peter see through her lies? Or is Fiona telling the truth? (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Probably shouldn't be plugging a movie review site developed with Domino. But what the hell, we're not in this for the money and they do really good reviews (although obviously reviews are by their nature subjective) pay a visit and see what you think. (44 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Lovely animated film about a fish whose son Nemo goes missing and all the people he meets on his way to find him. Amazing schooling fish scenes. Not just for the kids. (32 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Johnny Depp plays J.M. Barrie as the author finding his muse in the form of the Llewelyn-Davies family. .As he gets to know the children and their mother (Kate Winslet), who are getting over the death of their father, Barrie constructs the Peter Pan story around them. Beautifully filmed. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)It's easy to see why this sci-fi mixed with western TV show was cancelled after 15 episodes, it doesn't pander to the requirements of an hour-long episodic format. With 9 main characters and lots of back-story it needed time to bed in. Fox did't have that time, a great pity. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Harrison Ford plays a bank computer security expert who is forced to rob his employer when his family are kidnapped. The intensity is there and so is the Brit baddie (Paul Bettany). But it's let down by the plot which fizzles out. Remember to tidy away stray pick-axes though... (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Dennis Quaid plays an plane captain who crashes in the middle of the desert with passengers who really don't get on. To get home they have to build a new plane from the wreckage and fly out. All good action stuff with a few surprises along the way. Popcorn fayre. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Any new Foo Fighters album is cause to celebrate and it's up to Grohl et al's usual high standards. There isn't quite that standout track like previous records, so far I'd say The Pretender (first single from the album) is pretty good. I'll keep listening and probably change by tomorrow! (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)A great double release - the first disc with the heavier tunes, with the second of a more acoustic nature. Yet another indication of the band’s versatility and the insistence of Dave Grohl to make his mark based in own musical talent rather than rely purely on his Nirvana past. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Another funny and surprisingly sensitive movie from the makers of Knocked Up. Peter's TV celebrity girlfriend splits up with him and he tries to escape his depression in Hawaii...where she has also gone with her new rock-star boyfriend (brilliantly acted by Russell Brand). Peter finds himself and more! (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Basic premise, man gets dumped - for Russel Brand - goes on holiday to forget and ends up in the room next to them. Really warm with some genuinely laugh out loud moments, the romance is a little contrived but nevertheless believable. Lovely ensemble cast, Brand stands out too. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Mark Wahlberg and Andre Benjamin star in this revenge thriller where the eponymous brothers try to find the killers of their adoptive mother. Set in modern Detroit it's basically a western story line brought up to date with some crude humour and brutal violence. Nothing much new but still good. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This 'thought provoking' rom com starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughen had a fair few laugh out loud moments - often in jokes for mums - but failed to light my Christmas tree. The leads are likeable, the supporting cast quirky but it lacked originality. Fun but nothing new. (49 words)
| 1 Comment(s)Made during 'The Capital Years', if you could buy one Sinatra album this is the one. The arrangements are delightful, Nelson Riddle's production bang on the money, and the musicianship supreme. Sinatra is at is confident, charistmatic best, his timing and breathing are immaculate, and effortlessly so. A command performance. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Franz Ferdinand's eponymous album is an absolute stonker! Having the same singalong value as Athlete but with a bit more rock and in some cases even sounding a bit Bowie-ish it is an uplifting blend of tracks that will fit perfectly into a summer evening with a few beers. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This is so much the same sound as their debut album that I had to check the playlist I was listening to the right thing. So if you liked the first offering, you'll like this. There is no evolution in the music but it's still uplifting fun stuff. (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)A truly interesting book. Not words usually applied to economics but this is not your normal economics tome. Levitt applies his unique critical thinking to everything from why the US crime rate dropped in the 90s to how a typical drug dealer's gang is like a corporation. (47 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This 1996 crime thriller sees Kiefer Sutherland playing a homicidal lunatic who kills people on the I-5 highway. His freakish murderous tendancies bring him into contact with white trash tearaway, Vanessa Lutz (Reece Witherspoon) and boy does he regret picking her up...Witherspoon is brilliant but overall, the film is'without'. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)An interesting concept and very darkly shot. Lee Evans plays a man driven insane by being suspected of a murder ten years ago. Since then he has recorded every minute of his life on video to provide an alibi. We've to decide whether he's mad or is actually being persecuted. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This followed people from being born through the years to death struggling with injuries, illnesses and all true stories from peoples lives on how they survived. The excellent medical pictures and the wonders the modern doctor or surgeon can perform and just how the human fights back, a good series (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Patrick Fitzgerald, the lead singer of Fruit, may (or may not) be best known for his work in the genius band Kitchens of Distinction. This 1997 release saw Patrick branch out into indie-pop with catchy tunes like 'What Is Fruit' sat alongside darker songs like 'Leather Jacket'. Eclectic fun! (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)The impossibly cool Huey et al are back with more of the same. A mixture of rock, latin, pop and R&B combined in an homage to their home city... New York. If you liked Welcome to Poppy's you'll love this, if you didn't then don't bother. (46 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Judd Apatow's thoughtful movie about a comedian and film star (Adam Sandler) who discovers that he has a rare form of cancer never really catches fire and, whilst Sandler and Seth Rogan are excellent, the film took 2.5 hours to reach very few conclusions. Fun but ultimately disappointing. (48 words)
