This soundtrack for a new animated children’s film doesn’t disappoint. The songs are very catchy, and before you know it you’ll be humming “Replace, reuse, recycle” on the train to work. Highlight of the album is a duet with Ben Harper on “With My Own Two Hands”. (47 words)

This semi-autobiographical rebellious account of traversing America in the 1950s became the bible for the Beat Generation, with its wild adventures and crazy characters. His writing style gets difficult to follow sometimes, with detailed paragraphs spanning over pages, but it was revolutionary at the time, and still deemed a classic. (50 words)

There's not a bad song on this, the best album released by James. Despite its 1992 vintage, the songs have not dated at all - 'Sometimes' is beautiful. Other stand-outs include Say Something and Out To Get You. Despite dodgy, flowery, baggy T-Shirts, James helped define the early 1990s! (49 words)

Ok, anyone into jazz hates Jamie Cullum. Is he that bad though? The piano work on "I Get A Kick Out Of You" is superb. Some arrangements and original songs are excellent. Cullum can play, write and sing well, he simply chooses not to for much of the album. (49 words)

This is no Apocalypse Now but an interesting look at a group of marines in the first Gulf War. The story concentrates on the boredom and routine of everyday life in the desert which is the main problem with the film, nothing happens. But there are some entertaining set pieces. (50 words)

Simply the finest movie ever made. Spielberg took the concept of 50s "B" monster movies chewed it up and spat out the first "summer blockbuster". Perfect cast, story, locations, screenplay and absolutely blistering dialogue - "yer gaht city hands Mr Hoopah..."! A genre-creating masterpiece that still holds the viewer spellbound. (50 words)

With the explosion of the iPod, broadband and wireless, a traditional living room stereo is not really needed these days. Enter the JBL Creatures which as well as having superb quality sound-wise, are pieces of sculpture in their own right. Ideal if you are fully immersed in the tech world. (50 words)

Astonishing that Buckley was labelled a genius after one album containing three songs written solely by him. Yet, they are phenomenal. The changes/lyrics on 'Lover You Should Have Come Over' and 'The Last Goodbye' are breathtaking. Initially this album sounds screechy and disjointed. By the third listen you're utterly sold. This intimate live recording exposes Jeff Buckley at his best. Alone with a guitar in a New York cafe, he combines his own material with covers and jovial ad-libbing. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but his vocal range is amazing and this posthumous release does his memory justice. (49 words)

This is acoustic Americana at its best. Foucault's voice is full of resonance and the songs evoke images of an untamed America. The best track is 'Cross of Flowers'. Other stand-outs include '4&20 Blues' and 'Stripping Cane'. One to buy for a road-trip across an arid US landscape. (48 words)

More Chasing Amy than Dogma, this is another great Kevin Smith movie starring Ben Affleck as a single father struggling to reconcile his lost career with his new family life. Smith always writes good dialogue and doesn't disappoint here. The cast, as always, is excellent including a Will Smith cameo. (50 words)

A classic album revisited after rewatching Lost in Translations end credits and "Just Like Honey". Taking the Velvet Underground as their inspiration they created an album which still sounds fresh 20 years later. Obviously the inspiration for a lot of todays indie bands and no bad thing for that. Some good, plain Australian rock. It doesn't try to be anything else and because of that is a must have album for when you are just looking for guitars, drums and classic riffs. You'll already know Are You Gonna Be My Girl, the rest is more of the same. (49 words)

This lengthy (and densely written) book contains 5 intertwining stories which are connected by the pursuit of the ultimate perfume, eternal life and true love. It took a while to see where the tale was going but managed to be very engaging with a neat conclusion. Exhilarating writing. (48 words)

Based on his famous weblog, Spolsky draws on his experience of software development (Microsoft's Excel team, FogCreek) and results in an interesting and insightful if somewhat unstructured book. Most of the advice Joel gives is good (at least from my experience) but take the rants with a pinch of salt. (50 words)

There are a great collections of songs on this album, his major label debut, ranging from the funky “Used to Love you” to the mellow “Ordinary People”. Collaborations with Kayne West and Snoop Dogg work very well, infusing seamlessly into his style of music. (44 words)

McEnroe serves up an enjoyable reminder of the halcyon days of pro-tennis. Honest and at times modest, Superbrat nevertheless doesn't disappoint with at times self-adoring commentary of those early 80s battles (I thought Connors was the GOOD guy!) A good account from a sector not renowned for literary triumph. (49 words)

Better than average high school comedy/ drama/ romance. The preppy girl, the goth girl and the cheerleader get together with the new girl to get revenge on three-timing school hero Tucker. The best bits involve watching him wriggle his way out of their traps and coming up smelling sweet. (49 words)

Not your typical comedian live at a theatre type of DVD. But because Vegas' skill lies in pathos moving the audience between hysterics, fear and sympathy it works. Just. The filler material between the stand up bits is very weak at points. (42 words)

Dickens magic-fest pits two magicians against each other in the shadow of the Napoleonic threat. Add the melancholic and sinister intrusion of Faerie and you have one of the most intriguing fantasy novels for years. Worth the read, even if you don't care for the genre. (46 words)

I’ve enjoyed listening this album in the background, but can’t help but think that this brilliant voice has been backed up by songs that are a bit tame. Keen to hear her next album though. (35 words)

This is my film of 2008! What a funny, thoughtful and honest movie. A 16 year old high school student gets pregnant and decides to have the child and allow it to be adopted. We watch as this intelligent girl deals with the fall out. Amazing soundtrack too! (48 words)

Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo star in this sickly sweet romcom about a workaholic doctor who is in an accident and ends up in a coma where she can talk to Ruffalo who is (surprisingly) destined to be the love of her life. A couple of funny moments, nothing more. (50 words)
