| 0 Comment(s)I don't know enough about hiphop, but this is quality. Nas' introspective street-poetry, sophisticated samples and easy rhythms combine to make a great album that sounds fresh ten years on. Highlights include "One Love, an intelligent jazz-influenced track and "Life's A Bitch", featuring a mesmerising verse from AZ. (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Apparently one of the sports books of the year, and all in all a pretty good read. But you get the feeling that Nas only fully respects about 3 people in the cricket world and he can be a bit intransigent in his writing - a lot like his cricket! (50 words)
| 1 Comment(s)This simple online game site is hugely addictive. You create a country and are posed questions about how you want the country to run, your decisions impact the power, economy and civil liberties of your subjects. Interesting stuff and a good ten minutes of fun every day. (47 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This Nicholas Cage fronted action adventure has a lot of the Indiana Jones about it, with clues being followed in the search for Crusade treasure and the US Declaration of Independence as part of the treasure map. Sean Bean is a passable villan but the love story is rubbish. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Nicholas Cage reprises his role as Ben Gates, treasure hunter and historical super-sleuth. Loosely based around the folklore surrounding the assassination of Abe Liincoln, the movie is an uncanny carbon copy of the first in this franchise - copied and pasted special effects and all! A silly, fun no-brainer. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)A silly, fun record for those whose rebellion stretched to the lengths of 'killing their television'. The NADs had 2 bass players and 2 fantastic albums of indie-pogo-tunes. This was their first album and is great! Grey Cell Green, Your Complex and much more (of the same). (47 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Heath Ledger plays Kelly and is supported by Orlando Bloom in a movie which is in turns funny, dull, exciting and moving. It is less a coherent story than a series of set pieces, some of which are very good such as the bank robbery and the final shoot-out. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Sadly, this film wasn't Juno and, whilst Michael Cera is a fantastic actor, this was nothing more than a bit of teen angst noodling about love, bands, indie music and growing up with New York as a pretty backdrop. Makes you realise just how good Ferris Bueller really was! (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This is a collection of Nick Hornby’s monthly columns from the “The Believer” magazine. He lists the books he’s bought, then out of those that he actually reads he reviews them. A wonderful insight into what a famous author reads, and a great way of structuring one’s future reading list. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This fantasy film is very similar to Jumanji, in a good way. Creatures come to life in a New York museum and Ben Stiller has to control them or lose his job. A great classic supporting cast including Dick van Dyke and Ricky Gervais top off a lovely family movie. (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)A fantasy adventure for children set on a desert island, this story of a missing father and determined daughter was sweet and entertaining. Nice to see Jodie Foster doing something light, playing an agrophobic author, and my toddler loved the animals. It was just a bit contrived. Nevermind. (48 words)
| 0 Comment(s)If you liked the industrial angst-ridden metal mayhem of past Nine Inch Nails releases, you won't be disappointed with this one. The tempo is slowed down on tracks like "All the love in the World” and “Home”, which works well, otherwise Trent Reznor pumps it out hard and fast. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Nizlopi are in the same league as The Arctic Monkeys in that they have bypassed the marketing machines of major record labels and have become huge the old fashioned way – word of mouth. This is a great acoustic-based release, containing very honest and catchy tunes. Definitely worth a listen (50 words)
| 0 Comment(s)This adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel is atmospheric and bleak (see review of 'The Road'). The Coen Brothers stylise this film about a *very scary* serial killer who pursues a surly hick-town vietnam-vet who stumbles upon $2m of drug money. Big body count, bigger performance from Tommy Lee Jones. (49 words)
| 0 Comment(s)Nokia has finally got into the professional arena with this Blackberry competitor. For my requirements it beats the BB in every department with bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi it allows connections of all types and the keyboard is very usable. Minor annoyances are POP3 update frequency and some odd navigation shortcuts. (50 words)
