Don't let the title mislead you, the real traveling in this story is into history. Jono Riley relives some of the seminal moments of his past to make sense of the death of his first love. Engaging story, characters with depth and atmospheric scene setting. Whole book group loved it. (50 words)

Wes Anderson's take on Rohald Dahl's classic is itself fantastic. George Clooney and Meryl Streep lead the cast of voices for this kids movie which will please every parent possibly more than the kids! It manages to be exciting and cool and slackerish. Genius. (44 words)

Thought provoking, engrossing, insightful, frlghtening. This is a spectacular book set in a very near future London where a catastrophic terrorist attack on a Chelsea/ Arsenal derby profoundly affects the lives of one mother who decides to tell her story to Osama in a letter. Requires concentration but brilliant. (49 words)

An adolescent Jean-Pierre Leaud debuts as the young delinquant in this semi-autobiographical Truffaut-directed masterpiece. The story of Antoine Doisnel - a young parisian misfit - glides effortless between comedy and pathos in a film that generally regarded as having kick-started the nouvelle vague genre. Genial! The award winning documentary about the amazing Philippe Petit who, in 1974, carried out the most fantastically illegal artistic stunt ever: high wire walking between the twin towers in New York. The result is nothing short of awe inspiring - the preparation is almost as good as the result! (49 words)

It's not often that the film outdoes the book but this adaptation provided more developed characters and a clearer storyline than the novel on which it is based. Kate Winslet is excellent, as are the main supports. I only wish I had a better idea of its historical accuracy. (49 words)

Wow, I went into the cinema expecting something fairly light and was not prepared for the billiant, if harrowing, tale of one man's route to his I want to be a millionnaire answers. It was clever yet convincing, worrying and endearing. Acting excellent, setting spectacular. Oscars here we come. (49 words)

A waitress in a hick US town finds out that she's pregnant by her frankly frightening, horrible, abusive husband. An excellent movie charting several viewpoints of the same terrorist attack and assassination attempt on the President of the USA in Spain. Each viewpoint builds on our understanding of what is happening. Brilliant acting from Dennis Quaid and Forest Whittaker. This film had me on edge right through! (48 words)

Suspend your disbelief, take your friends, laugh and cry at this wonderful piece of musical silliness! The singing is of variable quality, but that really doesn't matter if you're in the spirit of things. With a cast who participate with great heart I wanted to 'sing it out loud'. (49 words)

I can't believe it took me so long to see this movie - it lived up to all the hype. The premise of disfunctional family takes road trip to youth beauty pagent doesn't in any way describe how poignant, thought provoking and downright funny this is. Excellent individual performances. (49 words)

It's 20 years since The Wedding Present released this, their debut album and every song remains strum-tastically wonderful. They serve up indie-pop songs almost exclusively about failed relationships. 'Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft' and 'Shatner' are stand-outs but there is not a single dud to be had here! (48 words)

I know this movie is schmaltzy and the ending is a bit of a cop-out but I loved it. Will Ferrell gave an understated performance which I didn't think was possible. And the supporting cast of Dustin Hoffman and Maggie Gylenhall just bring everything together in a wonderful inventive story. (50 words)

The Guardian review of this mystery thriller is not complimentary, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. While the exciting tale of murder, kidnap, code breaking and religious symbolism is Di Vinci Codesque, the setting is grittier and the characters more sympathetic. Fast paced, engaging and well worth a read. (49 words)

This early 1990's release saw ex Husker Du front-man Bob Mould create arguably the most polished rock album of that decade. 'Hoover Dam', 'Fortune Teller' and 'A Good Idea' are stand-outs but 'If I Can't Change Your Mind' is the most radio friendly. One to own!! (46 words)

At a few millimeters thick and 5 megapixel resolution it's hard to imagine cameras getting much smaller. This really is a superb bit of engineering. You lose a traditional viewfinder, but who uses those any more anyway. The LCD has cracking resolution and even the lens is pretty good. (49 words)

Any fears that this type of "challenge comedy" story pioneered by Dave Gorman is getting old are washed away. Danny Wallace has a simple challenge, say Yes to everything. It takes him around the world and is laugh out loud funny throughout. His winning streak after "Join Me" continues. (49 words)

The final volume of the Baroque Cycle brings together the numerous strands of the previous books and ties them together perfectly. Less swashbuckling and more political intrigue might not sound appealing but Stephenson has such command of plot and characters that we have a fitting end to a great story. (50 words)

The second in the Baroque Cycle trilogy continues to follow Daniel Waterhouse, Eliza and Jack Shaftoe on their respective journeys around the world in the 17th century. Like Quicksilver the depth of detail is astounding but this time there's more swashbuckling and intrigue. Can't wait for the final instalment. (49 words)

20 years of purveying intelligent and perfect sing-along pop songs have not dampened Erasure's live performance. Vince Clarke orchestrated things with a besuited frown while Andy Bell belted out songs old and new with high camp style. Standouts included Drama and Blue Savannah and the stage set was enchanting! A replacement for the trusty (well, except for the battery)2002 20gb i-Pod and it's great. This has a colour screen, room for tens of thousands of songs and photos and the ability to do slide shows through the TV. Much better sound quality than the 2nd generation i-Pod. (48 words)

The first three books of the 8 book Baroque Cycle is, quite simply, a triumph. A vast, sprawling novel which follows Daniel Waterhouse in 17th century London at the Royal Society. Stephenson brings so much texture to the world and characters that even after the thousand pages you want more. (50 words)

Evan Dando and the gang created the best guitar-pop album of the year 1992. Every song on this (wonderfully short!) album is foot-tappingly great - Confetti, Frank Mills, Kitchen and Bit Part are stand-outs. Evan Dando still plays many of these songs when touring - they're still great! (48 words)

Astonishing that Buckley was labelled a genius after one album containing three songs written solely by him. Yet, they are phenomenal. The changes/lyrics on 'Lover You Should Have Come Over' and 'The Last Goodbye' are breathtaking. Initially this album sounds screechy and disjointed. By the third listen you're utterly sold. Made during 'The Capital Years', if you could buy one Sinatra album this is the one. The arrangements are delightful, Nelson Riddle's production bang on the money, and the musicianship supreme. Sinatra is at is confident, charistmatic best, his timing and breathing are immaculate, and effortlessly so. A command performance. (50 words)

Considered the most influential jazz album of all time. Why? Because the songs are sweet: harmoniously disharmonious. Because Davis'/Coltrane's/Adderley's/Evans' playing sings out at you. Moreover, because of its perfect simplicity. It's not the only great jazz album, but buy it first. Then see where that takes you. (47 words)

An amazing album (released in 2000) from the former Whiskeytown frontman. This mostly acoustic album is full of beautiful, bittersweet break-up songs. Standouts include Winding Wheel and Amy. We saw him live in early 2001 (Leicester Y-Club) and he played for for over 3 hours - dedicated to his art! (50 words)

A silly, fun record for those whose rebellion stretched to the lengths of 'killing their television'. The NADs had 2 bass players and 2 fantastic albums of indie-pogo-tunes. This was their first album and is great! Grey Cell Green, Your Complex and much more (of the same). (47 words)

There's not a bad song on this, the best album released by James. Despite its 1992 vintage, the songs have not dated at all - 'Sometimes' is beautiful. Other stand-outs include Say Something and Out To Get You. Despite dodgy, flowery, baggy T-Shirts, James helped define the early 1990s! (49 words)

The greatest best-of album ever made. With classics like Famous Blue Raincoat, The Partisan, Suzanne and Sisters Of Mercy, it is beautiful from start to finish. Without doubt this is the perfect intro to L Cohen's many, varied and patchy albums (albeit, it was released before Everybody Knows!). (48 words)

An old-timey album of the indie-rock variety. The Frank & Walters brought us this classic album in the early 1990's and it still sounds great. Matthew Parris, the ex Parliamentary sketch writer for the Times has written one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. A fantastic read about those who have asked the big question of themselves, and made a change. Po has interviewed nearly 900 people, and it’s through their experiences he conveys interesting and informative messages. A refreshing change to the intense self-help style preaching one usually expects from such a book. (50 words)
